Good morning bookworms! This is another fantasy book I finished for June Fantasy Escape, this was my choice for a book by a BIPOC author.
Suyi Davies Okungbowa is a debut author and I think he did an amazing job. The world is so unique. There’s a class system based almost entirely on the colour of your skin and where you come from. People from the islands are said to have disappeared completely, they are called yellowskins and most people think they are a myth until Danso finds one in his barn. Danso is studying to be a scholar and is intended to Eshme, a high ranking young woman who’s mother rules the city’s black market basically. But Danso is always chasing the forbidden stories, the scrolls in the library he isn’t supposed to know about and definitely not read. So when he meets Lilong, the fabled yellowskin, and she is wielding Ibor, the fabled magical stones, his world changes entirely. Eventually he helps Lilong escape the city and is set on a course the will shake the very foundations of everything he knows to be true.
I really loved this one. It’s one of the most unique worlds I’ve read in a fantasy lately. However, that being said, the world building takes a long time. It’s a 500 page book and I spent the first 200 pages trying to figure out what the heck was going on. But it was definitely worth it because once I had it all straight things got really exciting. The action was great, the magic was really cool, and the ending was awesome. There are so many diverse characters too. I think this was a well done debut, and a great set up to an intriguing world. I am looking forward to book two in the series.
I can’t believe there are only 8 days left in June, I have 2 and a half books left that I want to finish, plus an extra book that I read the first 100 pages of and then got distracted! We shall see how I do for the last week of June.
PS. There is a flash giveaway happening today only on my Instagram account to win a copy of this book!
